Risk Management Focus
Prescribing for Yourself and Those Close to You

Overview

Prescribing for yourself, your family, or your close associates is not inherently illegal or unethical. In some cases, such as doctors who practice in remote areas where the nearest other physician is over an hour’s drive away, it may be absolutely necessary. However, such prescribing practices place you on a slippery slope with very narrow legal and ethical guidelines, and you can easily be subjected to public discipline against your license if you fail to stay within those guidelines.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1.  State the specific requirements for prescribing controlled substances for yourself, your family, and others close to you.
2.  Explain the inherent problems in treating and prescribing for yourself and your family, and the reasons why such practices should be discouraged.
3.  Besides yourself and your family, list other categories of individuals you should avoid treating and prescribing for.

Target Audience

This course is appropriate for anyone with prescriptive authority.
