Risk Management Rounds
Orthopaedics Plus, Vol. VI

It should come as no surprise to you that orthopaedic surgeons are among the top five most-sued medical and surgical specialists. Statistically, there’s a good chance you already have been sued. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to mitigate your risks of being sued, as well as to increase your odds of successfully fighting the claim off if you are.

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1.  Outline strategies for preventing nerve and blood vessel injuries during surgery.
2.  Explain the methods and importance of checking for and correcting leg length discrepancies before closing during hip and leg surgeries.
3.  Describe the patient education process and elements necessary to obtain legally binding informed consent.
4.  Explain the importance of recognizing the early signs of professional burnout in yourself and in those you work with and explain strategies to address the problem.
5.  Explain the importance of working closely with your defense team from the moment you learn that a claim against you has been filed, is pending, or is even likely.

Target Audience

All orthopaedists.
