Risk Management Rounds
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Second Edition

Overview
Fortunately, many malpractice suits are avoidable.  That’s because the majority of such claims are prompted not by physician negligence but by a combination of circumstances including systems failures, communication problems and patient anger—anger that, in most cases, can be anticipated and avoided or mitigated before she decides to contact an attorney.  Therefore, much of this course is directed at mitigating risk by learning to view your actions from patients’ perspectives and respond accordingly.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:
1. Discuss how communication with patients can help improve patient care and prevent lawsuits.
2. Apply principles of informed consent, implied consent and informed refusal in a variety of clinical situations.
3. Document patient care in a manner that reduces the risk of medical errors.
4. Explain how the doctor-patient relationship is formed and terminated in special circumstances, including contractual relationships, supervisory relationships, emergencies, coverage and on-call situations, and informal consultations.
5. Recognize the OBG’s duty to third parties such as spouses and sexual partners.
6. Recognize risks associated with specific procedures such as sterilization, and conditions including genetic and congenital issues, prescribing for pregnant patients, birth videos, breast cancer and ectopic pregnancy.
Target Audience
This course is designed for obstetricians and gynecologists who have a basic understanding of risk management.
