Risk Management Rounds: Physicians, Case Studies, Second Edition

Overview

Although there’s no guarantee that they won’t be sued in today’s environment, physicians can take steps to minimize the risk. By minimizing liability risk, they also take steps to reduce the chance of medical errors, and therefore improve patient safety. As in health care, prevention is preferable to treatment— and that’s why this course was developed.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1. Determine whether a set of circumstances would meet the four elements of malpractice.

2. Discuss communication factors that often contribute to medical errors and jeopardize patient safety.

3. Identify the elements of a defensible medical record.

4. Analyze and apply criteria for legitimate informed consent.

5. Identify and avoid risks associated with medical technology and e-mail.
