Overview

A review of state medical boards’ records revealed that between 90 and 100 physicians are disciplined annually for sexual abuse or sexual misconduct with a patient.  Given the serious nature and possible consequences of the behavior, it is necessary to review the reasons for the prohibition and provide guidance to physicians on how to handle potentially risky patient situations.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1. Distinguish between sexual harassment and sexual misconduct.
2. Recognize warning signs of potential boundary violations.
3. Formulate a plan for avoiding potential boundary violations.

 Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians who want to learn how to avoid boundary violations and their consequences.

Methodology

This is a self-study course consisting of text and CME test.  Physicians should read the course content, answer the test questions and submit the answers for scoring.  Those who complete the course with a score of 80 percent or higher will earn a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 creditsTM.
