Risk Management Focus
Informed Consent, 3rd Edition

Overview

Failure to obtain informed consent is a legitimate concern in its own right. Malpractice claims usually arise from an unpleasant surprise. A properly informed patient will sometimes be disappointed by a treatment outcome, but should never be completely surprised. Your job as a physician is to keep your patient’s expectations in line with reality.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1.  List the requirements of informed consent.
2.  Explain the importance of explaining to your patient what to expect if treatment succeeds, in addition to the known and normal risks of the procedure.
3.  Understand the patient’s right to set conditions on consent, and how to negotiate a mutually-agreeable alternative plan if the patient’s desires prove unfeasible.

Target Audience

All physicians.
